It all started when the Spanish Banco Santander in August 1997 wanted to take over the Banco Noroeste Brazil.

The fraudulent activity was uncovered later on in December 1997 where a joint board meeting took place and an official from Santander inquired about why should such huge amount of money almost two-fifths of Noroeste's total value and half of their capital was sitting in the cayman islands unmonitored.

This was the reason that led to criminal investigation in Brazil, Switzerland, Britain, Nigeria and the united states. However, Banco Noroeste collapse in 2001.
